                                 The Pedestrians

(From left to right: Matthew Fisher, Simon van Harte, Keanu Harker, Jordan Simons and Bradley Prince)

A young, vibrant and fresh Cape Town based band. The band started with Jarrad Ricketts that was the host of the Summer Market in 2013 and needed a band to perform with him. He then sourced Rezah Sampson on keyboard, Simon van Harte on bass and Emillio Buckton on drums. Jarrad and The Pedestrians was the resident band at Jou Ma Se Comedy Club (now the Cape Town Comedy Club) in the V & A Waterfront from June 2014 to October 2014 and has built up a great following of supporters. As from 1 November 2014, Jarrad and The Pedestrians was being managed by FP Productions and they also changed their name to The Pedestrians. On 2 May 2015 The Pedestrians won Best Band Category for the Suidoosterfees Talent Search and was the overall winner for 2015. In August 2015, Jarrad Ricketts got an opportunity to pursue his career in theatre, whereby he will be part of Orpheus in Africa, a David Kramer production. Jarrad then parted ways with the band to pursue his solo career and Rezah Sampson has also worked on his solo career as a jazz pianist and in September 2015 Rezah parted ways from the Pedestrians as well. The opportunities that has opened up for the band members has been phenomenal yet we are fortunate to have partnerships with musicians and music academies which enabled us to introduce a new vocalist and keyboardist. Keanu Harker joined us as our new vocalist on and Barry Box as keyboardist on 19 September 2015. In April 2017 Emillio Buckton had to also leave the band due to full time employment and his studies after hours, and we then acquired Matthew Fischer as the band's new drummer. In May 2018 Barry Box parted ways with the band when he went into full time employment and we were joined by Jordan Simons on keyboard.

Performance Review

"The Pedestrians, a fine quartet and vocalist who dish up contemporary pop with jazzy undertones. It’s peculiar that each member came up with bop names as influences. Rezah Sampson the keyboard player sighted Bud Powell, drummer Emillio Buckton said Max Roach, for guitarist Bradley Prince it was Charlie Christian and George Benson while bassist Simon van Harte named Jaco Pastorius. For the dynamic vocalist Jarrad Ricketts it was Frank Sinatra. I enjoyed their set especially the combining of “The Pink Panther Theme” with “Fever”. This band is going to make waves."

Newspaper article in the 'Son op Sondag' newspaper on 4 October 2015

The Pedestrians has built a good partnership with South Peninsula High School in Plumstead. The partnership is with their Music Department under the leadership of Ms Dianne Gordon. They avail their music classrooms for the band to rehearse on a weekly basis. We are proud to say that our guitarist, Bradley Prince, is a graduate of Ms Gordon. We highly appreciate their assistance in the development of our band and music.

Keanu Harker - Vocalist

Keanu is a 20 year old 2nd year student at the Cape Music Institute under the mentorship of maestro Camillo Lombard. Keanu is a music composer and is well versed in both English and Afrikaans music. He recently was part of putting together a Spring Concert at CMI whereby 10 of his original compositions were performed by a series of the graduates. He also plays the guitar and drums.

He has been part of 2 bands and since his introduction to The Pedestrians, it has been his first opportunity to be part of a professional band. His 1st promo performance with The Pedestrians was at jazz venue, Lounge 021 Swingers followed by Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. He was of course nervous on the first night of their performance but then wowed the audience on the second night at Joy of Jazz

Simon Van HarteBass Guitarist

Simon started his involvement with music playing piano and classical guitar, Simon was introduced to the bass in grade 10 at Bergvliet High School.

Starting as the bassist in Bergvliet’s Junior Band, he quickly worked his way up to the Senior Band the next year. With both bands he performed in the annual Big band jazz festival at the Baxter, the Cape Town Eisteddfod and the Battle of the Bands at the V&A waterfront.

He also played in the Bergvliet Tentet where they performed on Expresso, Goodhope
FM, along with other small gigs for the school. In 2011, the Senior Jazz Band of Bergvliet was invited to the tutti world youth music festival held in Beijing. During his time at Bergvliet he was asked to play in a youth jazz band called The Little Giants in which he gigged in and around Cape Town.

Today he is entering his 3rd year of Chemical Engineering at UCT, but still enjoys gigging wherever and with whomever he can. Simon currently belongs to the band known as Jarrad and The Pedestrians.

Matthew Fischer - Drummer

Matthew Fischer has been playing drums since the age of 7 and he is currently studying Mechatronics Engineering at CPUT.

He was part of the South Peninsula High School Senior jazz band since Grade 9 until matric. He was selected to be part of the Western Cape All Star Band under Don Vino Prins and Camilo Lombard for 3 consecutive years. That band also played at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Matthew was selected as the drummer for the National Schools Big Band at the Grahamstown National Jazz Festival. He was part of the production team for the CTIJF on the Rosies Stage, and he was part of the recording for a CD with classical pianist Reggie Dreyer. He has done various productions and concerts at Baxter Theatre, Artscape and CTICC. Matthew currently is also working with Glen Hartmann and Grethe van de Merwe.

Jordan Simons – Keyboardist

19 year old, Jordan Simons from Grassy Park has been playing keyboard since the age of 15 and is currently in second year, studying towards a Business Administration degree at the University of the Western Cape.

He grew up being a drummer in his local church until the middle of high school when he had attended piano lessons and has been under the mentorship of Trevor Fischer. Since the start of his piano/keyboard playing he has accompanied various artists and played with many bands in and around Cape Town.

Jordan has performed on some of Cape Town's most renowned stages, this includes the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre, the Baxter Theatre as well as the Artscape Opera House where he played synth/keyboards alongside The Pedestrians in 2017 at the annual Boogie production directed by Rafiek Mammon.

He has shared the stage with some of Cape Town's biggest names such as Camillo Lombard, Janice Now and Craig Lucas. Jordan is currently working with singer/songwriter Jodi Fredericks on her upcoming EP as well as chart topping artist, Reece Le Roux.

Bradley Prince - Guitarist

Bradley started playing the keyboard at the age of 10 and started guitar at school in Grade 8. He became a member of the South Peninsula High Jazz Band where his true passion for Jazz came from.

He has played at many festivals and venue's such as the Community Chest Carnival, Green Market Square Free Concert and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival where he played as a member of the ALL STAR BAND under direction by Don Vino Prins. He has also made it into the NATIONAL SCHOOLS BIG BAND conducted by Ian Darrington (UK).

He enjoys playing Jazz and others genre's like R&B, pop and house. He is currently studying at the SOUTH AFRICAN COLLEGE OF MUSIC (UCT) as a 3rd year jazz student. Bradley was proudly selected to be part of the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band in 2015 and now also part of the Delft Big Band as well as the UCT Big Band.
