Music Partnerships

Faizel was drawn into music development by his late friend and colleague, Melanie Davids. She was the music coordinator at the Amy Biehl Foundation and has been working for many years offering music tutoring in her community of Bonteheuwel and at community base level. She was also involved with the establishment of the Western Cape Musicians Association along with William Rezant and Ian Smith. Melanie has built up relationships with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, Hugo Lambrecht and the Bishops School of Music. Melanie also worked closely with the diva, Aviva Pelham, putting together various gala events and fundraisers with a series of performers from the after-school programmes in the townships. Her work with the Western Cape Musicians Association inspired Faizel to help educate artists about their rights and to protect them against exploitation in the industry.

Faizel’s first event he did was the Cape Township Jazz Festival in 2011 at the Gugulethu Indoor Sports Complex. The line-up was artists from the various Amy Biehl afterschool programmes (marimba, brass and traditional dancing), local artists The Tribe of Benjamin, township jazz artists and visiting group the Milton Academy of Jazz from Boston, USA.

During 2013, Faizel started working with Ashur Petersen and establishing his individual brand (S A Fire Productions) and an online presence. Together they put together a 4-piece live band to perform with Ashur, and they had various performances around the city. In December 2013, they did the rerun of a production called: Like Father Like Son, A tribute to Taliep Petersen, created by Ashur. The production was held at The Artscape Theatre, and they had 2 sold out nights of performances. The musical producer for this event was Camillo Lombaard of Micallo Productions and founder of the Cape Music Institute. Ashur during this period also wrote and recorded his original song entitled: Perfect Life, with producer Moeneeb Galant of Gimme Moe Productions. Ashur was thereafter signed by music production company Isibuko Productions, with the prospects to travel to the USA and FP Productions was then approached by Jarred Ricketts to help manage and develop his band, The Pedestrians. Below are some photos of the Like Father Like Son Productions in 2013.
